Cold Days & Dark Nights

Extremely cold days and dark nights, peppered with daylight in bright blue hues, drew me to these Indonesian Gem Silica stones that I chose for this trio of necklaces. Winter has been a fluctuation of dark days and bright blue skies. On the sunny days, I can usually spot a pair of ravens flying above and hear chickadees chirping at the top of the Douglas Fir behind my workspace. Calming constants of nature captured in silver and stone.

The ravens like to tease my dog by sitting in a tree above her and cawing down, egging her on to bark. It is usually a pair and I like to think they are the same pair that come to visit me. I think we stand out on the snow and they like to swoop low and pretty close. Once the pair followed me on my snowmobile for about the last two miles of my ride home. That was pretty cool. I used to dream of training one, I thought it could bring me shiny things the campers left behind. After visiting a bird sanctuary this December and seeing human impacted crows, now in captivity, I have changed my mind on that aspect.

There is something magical about the moon glowing on the snow during the winter. The crescent moon seems to stand out sharper against the dark, early night skies.

Braided leather cording with handmade ends and clasp felt like a warm choice for winter weather. I made every bit, including making the tubing for the leather ends. The leather is pinned in place, no glue is used.

Two necklaces can be worn on either side and one has a bird flying on the back. Birds hold a special magic for me. I hope I captured their essence and the feeling of the season in these pieces. Enjoy! Kelly
